Gospel singer has addressed the criticism directed at female gospel artists who have gone through divorce, highlighting the double standards often applied to them compared to their secular counterparts. She pointed out that while the dissolution of a secular artist’s marriage may go unnoticed or be downplayed, the end of a gospel artist’s marriage becomes a major topic of public scrutiny.
She stressed that no one should feel compelled to remain in a toxic or abusive marriage, explaining that marriage should be a source of joy, not suffering. “Marriage is meant to be a blessing, not a burden,” she explained, acknowledging that while challenges are inevitable, an abusive relationship should not be tolerated, especially when it negatively affects one’s mental well-being. Afia further emphasized that no one should feel their life is at risk due to an unhappy marriage, and that marriage is not a prerequisite for entering heaven according to the Bible.
Afia also condemned the spread of false information, warning that people often judge without knowing the full circumstances behind a situation, which can damage an artist’s reputation. Her comments come in the wake of gospel artist Ohemaa Mercy facing backlash after revealing her divorce, which she attributed to divine guidance through prayer.
