Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has called for calm and unity after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He acknowledged the widespread disappointment among Ghanaians but urged continuous support for the team despite the setback.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Lawson FM, Nyantakyi stressed the importance of addressing the team’s shortcomings urgently. He suggested that the Ghana Football Association and the technical team take proactive steps to improve performance ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
He emphasized the need for a fresh approach to player selection, advocating for individuals who display unwavering commitment and dedication to the national team. “We cannot afford to stick to routine selections,” Nyantakyi said, expressing optimism that Ghana could bounce back with the right strategy and personnel.
The Black Stars, led by head coach Otto Addo, have faced mounting criticism after a dismal performance in the AFCON qualifiers, where they finished last in Group F with just three points. Their campaign included three losses and three draws, marking the first time in two decades that Ghana has failed to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Meanwhile, the GFA is yet to decide on the future of the technical team as fans and stakeholders await measures to rebuild the team’s credibility and competitive edge.
