The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has announced plans to examine the reasons behind the party’s unexpected loss in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
Chairman Wontumi highlighted the importance of collaboration among party stakeholders, particularly in the Ashanti region, to uncover factors contributing to the defeat. Speaking at a press conference on December 9, 2024, he emphasized the need for reflection, stating, “If it is a time to cry and you don’t cry, people will talk about it. And if it is time to laugh and you don’t laugh, people will talk about it. So, God knows why he created crying and laughing.”
He further disclosed that regional executives, Members of Parliament, parliamentary candidates, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, as well as other key figures, would be engaged in discussions to understand the lapses. “It didn’t go well for us,” he admitted, “but the NPP branch in the Ashanti region will very soon call on all the leaders… to investigate what went wrong and bring it to the attention of the public.” He concluded by urging unity, expressing hope for the party’s revival to ensure progress for both Ghana and the Ashanti region.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared John Dramani Mahama the victor of the presidential race, securing 6,328,397 votes. The NPP candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, garnered 4,657,304 votes.
In addition to reclaiming the presidency, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made significant strides in Parliament, achieving a groundbreaking majority with 185 seats, according to the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.
