President John Dramani Mahama has named Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA). This historic appointment marks the first time the position has been filled internally, a move announced on January 24, 2025, through the NCA’s official Facebook page.
Rev. Ing. Fianko, whose career spans over two decades, has distinguished himself in radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunications, broadcasting regulation, and ICT innovation. Starting his journey with the NCA as a National Service Person in 2004, he climbed the professional ladder to become Director of the Engineering Division in January 2024.
In this capacity, he spearheaded the management of Ghana’s radio frequency spectrum and chaired the Significant Market Power Operations Team to ensure fair competition in the industry. A key figure in Ghana’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, he also contributed to the development of DTT receiver specifications, which were subsequently adopted as standards by ECOWAS.
On the global stage, Rev. Ing. Fianko has played a vital role in shaping telecommunications policies, collaborating with organizations such as the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), ECOWAS, and RASCOM. His influence was further recognized in 2022 when he was elected to the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the 2023–2026 term.
Holding academic qualifications in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from KNUST, Communications Management from Buckinghamshire New University, and Applied Business Leadership from Universidad Católica de Murcia, Rev. Ing. Fianko exemplifies the blend of technical prowess and leadership.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, he serves as a Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, is a published author, and founded the Nkwa.Life evangelistic outreach ministry.
Rev. Ing. Fianko steps into the role following Dr. Joe Anokye, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a vision to advance Ghana’s communications sector toward greater innovation and development.
