Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has reflected on how his time in prison changed him, admitting that he might have been a completely different person if God had not humbled him.
Before his incarceration, he acknowledged that his fame had reached an extraordinary level, making him feel invincible.
In a recent interview, the musician shared that his imprisonment was a necessary lesson that brought him back to reality.
“I don’t know who I would have been if I hadn’t gone to prison. I was getting too famous; I thought I was above everybody. God had to teach me a lesson when I went into a jail cell,” he revealed.
Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel was jailed in 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. He was sentenced to life in prison, but was released in July 2024 after the Jamaican Court of Appeal declined to retry the case.
He was convicted after a 64-day murder trial.
The UK Judicial Committee of the Privy Council quashed his conviction in March 2024.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the case would not go to court again.
The court considered the seriousness of the crime, the passage of time, and the expense of a retrial.
The court also considered that Kartel was in declining health and that a new trial would impact his physical and mental well-being.
