Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has officially taken over as Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), following his swearing-in at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14, 2025. His appointment comes after the revocation of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s tenure.
In his inaugural address, COP Yohuno reaffirmed his commitment to upholding peace and security across the nation. “I will approach my new role with utmost seriousness, fully aware of the responsibilities,” he stated. He further emphasized that professionalism, transparency, and accountability will be central to his leadership in ensuring law and order.
President John Dramani Mahama presided over the swearing-in ceremony, officially confirming Yohuno’s new role. A statement from Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Thursday, March 13, highlighted that the appointment was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, with input from the Council of State.
Extensive Experience in Law Enforcement
With a career spanning four decades, COP Yohuno is recognized for his expertise in crime-fighting and police administration. His track record includes serving as Director-General for various departments, including the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) and Administration. Before his latest promotion, he was the Deputy Inspector General of Police, a position he assumed in July 2024.
His leadership has earned him widespread acclaim. Ernest Owusu Bempah, Director of Communications at Ghana National Gas Company, described him as “the best officer to fight crime… He has the master code for criminals in Ghana.”
