The newly appointed Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has set an ambitious target to restore 70% of the city’s non-functional streetlights within her first 50 days in office. She emphasized that improving visibility and security in Accra is a top priority and pledged to work closely with the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to achieve this goal.
“In fact, within 50 days in office, all these things should be fixed. I will make sure that at least 70 percent of the streetlights should be fixed,” she assured during a press briefing in Accra on Monday, February 3.
Additionally, the minister unveiled plans to revive the National Sanitation Day initiative and introduce a Cleanest City Award, encouraging a more competitive and responsible approach to environmental hygiene. She announced that the last Friday of every month would be dedicated to a regional clean-up exercise in alignment with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s “Clean Up Ghana” agenda.
Security and sanitation remain at the forefront of her administration’s priorities, as she reiterated during an engagement with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC). Waste management, she stressed, would be a key performance indicator for MMDCEs.
Her vision includes the introduction of a comprehensive sanitation strategy that promotes waste segregation and ensures the availability of bins and garbage bags in public spaces and homes.
