The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the University of Ghana to reduce residential facility fees from GHC3,000 to GHC2,500 for all students, both fresh and continuing.
This directive was issued during a meeting between the Education Ministry, the University’s Management, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, and the Student Representative Council (SRC) on February 6 in Accra.
“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
Prof. Nana Aba Amfo pledged the University’s commitment to implementing the reduction and strengthening student consultations.
“We have listened to you, our Minister, and also our students, and we can afford to reduce it to 25 percent across the board. Going forward, there will be adequate student engagement,” she assured.
Meanwhile, SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah welcomed the decision but insisted on refunds for students who had already made payments.
“We are thankful for the reduction; at least it will reduce some sort of burden from our parents. There should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he demanded.
University authorities report that 80 percent of students have already settled their residential fees.
