Ethiopian Airlines’ Boeing 737-860 has made history by landing the first-ever commercial direct flight at the newly upgraded Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi. This milestone marks a significant moment for air travel in Ghana, as Kumasi becomes a hub for international connections.
The historic flight was met with excitement and mixed reactions across social media platforms, as Ghanaians celebrated the development while discussing its implications for tourism and economic growth in the Ashanti Region.
Prempeh I International Airport (IATA: KMS, ICAO: DGSI) serves as a key gateway to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, and also connects other parts of Ghana, including the middle and northern belts. The airport, situated 6 kilometers (4 miles) from Kumasi, transitioned from a military base to a public airport in 1999. It has since undergone extensive renovations to achieve its international status.
In 2023, the airport recorded over 400,000 passengers, solidifying its position as Ghana’s second busiest airport, trailing only Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The recent expansion and international recognition of Prempeh I International Airport are expected to boost travel, trade, and tourism across the region.
This landmark event underscores the importance of continued investment in Ghana’s aviation infrastructure, as the country aims to strengthen its position as a key player in the West African aviation market.
