Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel has revealed that his imprisonment may have saved his life.
Reflecting on his past, the musician admitted that before his incarceration, his fame was immense, and it made him overly confident.
“I would have been dead if I hadn’t gone to prison,” Kartel stated. “I believe God humbled me because the fame was getting to my head. I am grateful to Him.”
He acknowledged that prison served as a lesson, shaping his perspective and grounding him in a way he had never experienced before.
Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel was jailed in 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. He was sentenced to life in prison, but was released in July 2024 after the Jamaican Court of Appeal declined to retry the case.
He was convicted after a 64-day murder trial.
The UK Judicial Committee of the Privy Council quashed his conviction in March 2024.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the case would not go to court again.
The court considered the seriousness of the crime, the passage of time, and the expense of a retrial.
The court also considered that Kartel was in declining health and that a new trial would impact his physical and mental well-being.
