A private legal practitioner, Kwaku Amoh Darteh, has dismissed claims by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas that he has been vindicated in his legal battle against Kennedy Agyapong in the United States, calling them “preposterous.”
According to Mr. Amoh Darteh, Anas’ celebrations are premature since the case has not yet reached its final conclusion.
Anas had previously declared victory after a New Jersey court found Kennedy Agyapong, a former Ghanaian Member of Parliament, liable for defamation, awarding damages of $18 million.
Reacting to this, one of Agyapong’s lawyers in Ghana told Accra-based Class FM that Anas’ public jubilation is misplaced, as the legal process is ongoing. “It is surprising and unnecessary for Anas and his team to be making such statements when the case has not been fully resolved. People should remain patient and wait for the final outcome.”
The lawyer further clarified that no judgment has been officially entered, which means no damages can be enforced at this stage. “In simple legal terms, there cannot be an award without a judgment. The case is still in process, and there is a pending motion for a mistrial that will be decided within 30 days. Until then, all claims about an $18 million award are premature.”
