Ghana’s 2024 elections have ushered in a new chapter with John Dramani Mahama reclaiming the presidency, marking a significant victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This historic transition, driven by widespread dissatisfaction with the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, has sparked reflective and critical commentary from various public figures, including musician and entrepreneur Criss Waddle.
On December 8, Criss Waddle took to social media to express his frustrations with what he described as the oppressive and mismanaged tenure of President Nana Akufo-Addo. His posts painted a grim picture of the challenges Ghanaians endured over the past eight years, including economic hardship, stifling of free speech, and controversial governance priorities.
Waddle criticized the NPP administration for prioritizing projects like the national cathedral amidst widespread unemployment and economic distress. He lamented the disregard for public opinion and the apparent suppression of dissent, likening the administration’s style to a dictatorship.
“You silenced critics, arrested journalists, and imposed crippling taxes, all while people cried out for relief,” Waddle wrote on X. “Instead of addressing hunger and joblessness, you insisted on building a cathedral nobody asked for.”
The musician also reflected on movements like “Fix The Country,” where citizens demanded solutions to pressing national problems, only to be met with dismissive responses. “Instead of fixing the country, you told us to fix ourselves,” he added, underscoring the disconnect between the government and its citizens.
Waddle’s posts resonate with a growing wave of dissatisfaction among Ghanaian celebrities, many of whom have begun to openly critique the outgoing administration as the nation transitions to NDC leadership.
While the Electoral Commission is yet to make an official declaration, NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has conceded defeat, paving the way for Mahama’s leadership in what many hope will be a more responsive and inclusive administration.
